This priming unit launches the school year by helping students build a strong classroom community while introducing the routines, habits, and mindset of successful first graders. Through conversations, collaborative activities, and self-reflection, students explore who they are as learners, recognize the unique strengths they bring to the classroom, and begin developing the executive function skills needed to thrive.
The culminating performance task, "We Are Ready for First Grade!", invites students to create or update a personal resumé that celebrates their growth, interests, accomplishments, and goals. Students reflect on what they learned over the summer, identify their strengths, and share how they contribute to their classroom team. By presenting their resumés, students help classmates and teachers get to know them while establishing a culture that values every learner's unique talents.

Teacher's Implementation Guide!
This is the beginning of the school year! Days one and two should really be focused on building relationships (you and your students and students to students) and learning about the classroom procedures.
Activity Lists
For a Future-Powered Classroom, an Activity List isn't simply a list of assignments. It's a collection of purposeful learning experiences that students select from based on their interests, readiness, learning goals, or the executive function skills they need to strengthen.
Student Progress-Monitoring Checklist and Facilitation Grid
Student Action Checklist helps students recognize and celebrate the behaviors that contribute to a positive, collaborative classroom community. Rather than focusing only on academic learning, the checklist encourages students to reflect on the habits and executive function skills that help them become responsible classmates and successful learners.
